New Delhi: Rains are a bad time for people suffering from allergies.

Given the high humidity during monsoons, fungal growth is higher in this season than any other. This means bad news for the skin, the scalp and the immune system.

"Taking care of your skin is important during the rainy season, especially from fungal and bacterial infections," says pulmonologist, Max Medcentre, Dr Nevin Kishore.

Adds dermatologist Max Medcentre, Dr Munish Paul, "One must look out for moisture this season because fungus loves humidity and bacteria loves humidity. So it's important to stay dry."

Humidity does not just affect the skin, it can also make the scalp all itchy and scratchy, which may in turn lead to fungal growth. People with long hair are especially vulnerable to scalp infections during the monsoons. They are also susceptible to increased hair fall in this weather.

Hair experts say one reason why hair may fall at a higher rate during the monsoons could be because for 80 per cent of people, hair is in the telogen or the end phase of its life cycle. Couple this with humidity, which makes hair weak and thus easily breakable and one needs to seriously protect their scalp in this weather.

Says trichologist, Richfeel Trichology Centre, Dr Varun Gupta, "It's important to oil and shampoo hair at least thrice a week. One must also look out for dandruff or any fungal infections and try and keep hair dry all the time."

He stresses on the fact that there is no way one should ignore this hair fall especially if the hair loss is between 50-60 strands a day and for a couple of months continuously.
